邵逸夫奖官方网站2008年6月10日在宣布，2008年（第五届）邵逸夫奖数学奖由俄罗斯Steklov数学研究院（莫斯科）的首席科学家及法国巴黎大学Vladimir Arnold 教授和俄罗斯Steklov数学研究院（圣彼得堡）的欧拉数学研究所所长Ludwig Faddeev教授共同获得，获奖因为是“for their widespread and influential contributions to mathematical physics”而获奖。他们两人将分享一百万美元的奖金。

邵逸夫奖于2002 年设立，以表彰在学术及科学研究或应用获得突破成果，和该成果对人类生活产生意义深远影响的科学家。目前在数学科学、天文学、生命科学与医学领域设有3个奖项，每年颁奖一次，每项奖金100万美元。现代微分几何学的奠基者陈省身(S.S.Chern)教授、费马大定理的终结者怀尔斯（A. Wiles）教授分别获得第一、二届邵逸夫数学奖。中国科学院数学与系统科学研究院研究员吴文俊院士和美国布朗大学应用数学系David Mumford教授共同获得第三届邵逸夫奖数学奖，而普林斯顿高等研究所的Robert Langlands教授和哈佛大学的Richard Taylor教授共同获得第四届邵逸夫奖数学奖。

Vladimir Arnold born 1937 in Odessa, Ukrainian SSR, is presently the Chief Scientist at Steklov Mathematical Institute in Moscow and a Professor at the Université Paris Dauphine, France. He obtained his first degree in 1959 at the Moscow State University, was awarded a Candidateˇs Degree (equivalent to a Ph.D.) in 1961 and became a professor in 1965. He is a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Ludwig Faddeev born 1934 in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Russia, is a Director of the Euler International Mathematical Institute, Petersburg Department of Steklov Institute of Mathematics. He graduated from Leningrad State University in 1956 and became a Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences in 1963. He has been a Professor of Leningrad State University since 1967 and was the President of the International Mathematical Union (1986-1990). Professor Faddeev is a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the US National Academy of Sciences and the French Academy of Sciences.
